Day 28: Hiking among the Saguaro (2/2/22)

This morning we put on hiking boots and warm jackets (it’s chilly here until mid-afternoon), and headed off to the Sunset Vista trailhead, a moderate 2.5-mile hike (one way) that leads to a much more challenging climb to the top of Picacho Peak. So grateful for good hiking shoes (Keene) and a husband who likes to exercise.

The morning was fresh, the initial climb invigorating, and we had sweeping views of the valley we were leaving.

Once we’d scrambled up the first quarter mile of the hike, it was generally gentle climbs or descents, though we had to watch our feet carefully on downhill slopes—the scree made them slippery. There is a frisson of panic when the foot starts to slip and keeping one’s balance is tricky. I won’t say which one of us fell, but it wasn’t me.

Such a great workout in the morning gave us permission to lounge again in the afternoon. Besides, it got windy later in the day, and the dogs were delighted to have us inside, reading and practicing the keyboard. Dinner: leftovers (the best kind of dinner when camping). Evening entertainment: Finishing Under the Vines. Highly recommend.
