Day 44: More Pain in Paradise (2/18/22)
So, I was feeling a little better today, with diminishing chills and muscle aches. Phil has been tremendous, taking care of the dogs and letting me sleep. However, last night I was attacked by a small but severe muscle spasm under my right shoulder blade. I have a high tolerance for pain but have never in my life experienced such cruel, unremitting agony. I sat up most of the night, unable to lie down.
Poor Phil. It’s so hard for guys if they can’t fix what’s wrong. He gets high marks for trying, though. In the morning he suggested trying the hot tub at the lovely YMCA in Mission Viejo. Getting into the car was torture, but the trip was worth it.
Ahh, the heat! It was just what I needed: a full hour in the sun, warmth, and hot tub jets. And the pool area is really like a spa.
I felt good enough to try a few swimming strokes in the big pool, which was to prove a mistake. Later that afternoon I was in such pain that I downed three aspirin and signed up for PlushCare, an online medical consulting program. I spoke to a doctor online and got a prescription for a muscle relaxant. Much better than sitting for two hours in urgent care!
Phil brought back medication and a heating pad from a nearby CVS, and…aaahhhh…I was able to sleep through the night. Thank you, dear man.
